Coles strips 'red cordial' chemicals from kids' food

Coles announced today that they have removed artificial colours and added MSG from their Homebrand lines. This is wonderful news, a great relief for parents and teachers.

However, parents need to know that for some children the effects of natural colour annatto (160b) can be as bad as artificial colours - especially for tantrums and head banging in young children - and that food labelled "no added MSG" can still contain high levels of natural glutamates that can affect some children, especially in ingredients such as yeast extract and hydrolysed vegetable protein.

There is now no excuse for artificial colours ever appearing in school canteens.
