Logan Farm Chips and Annatto 160b colour


Logan Farm have recently added annatto 160b to their Crinkle Cut chips, with annatto declared on the label.

But are they using up old packaging and not yet declaring the presence of annatto in their Straight Cut chips? This is legal but could be misleading for the many who react to annatto 160b as badly as to any artificial colour.

Every day we get reports of this natural colour being used in more and more foods, and every day we hear more and more reports of people reacting.

I have just discovered when cooking lunch that the Logan Farm Guilt-Free Fries in crinkle cut (I haven't seen the straight ones packet but assume they would be the same) now contain annatto extracts - thanks to Danielle

We often have oven fries on Saturday nights and have been using the "Logan Farm" Guilt-Free Fries for years. With a family of 5 we usually use two packets. In recent weeks I have noticed that sometimes one packet has been somewhat yellower than the other. Initially we dismissed this as inter-batch variation. However, last night my wife thought to check the ingredients list (duh) and discovered that "Annatto extracts" (aka 160b) is now listed. It therefore seems that Logan Farm have quietly added 160b to their Guilt-Free Fries lines (at least those bought in South Australia) which now rules them out of the failsafe category.

Adding this colour to this product is the epitome of the food industry's insane food colour obsession. Logan Farm had an established product. Why on earth did they suddenly decide that their chips needed to be yellower?  - thanks to Jonathan

You may wish to reconsider your decision, particularly in light of the information below. A safe alternative exists: natural beta carotene 160a is a food colour found in many fruit and vegetables and is a precursor to Vitamin A. Please use that instead if you must put a colour in your chips.

Here is what is happening to Unilever Australia which manufactures Streets ice cream products that contain Annatto 160b:

What if 5,000 people wrote to them and said they didn't like the flavour of Streets icecream? Streets would change the formulation in a flash.

But this is far more serious. More than 5,000 people have taken the trouble to tell Streets how badly they are affected by a totally unnecessary harmful natural colour when a simple safe alternative exists.

Streets competitors have already changed recently:

•    Parmalat Australia Ltd removed Annatto 160b from their Vaalia yoghurt

•    Sanitarium Australia removed Annatto 160b from their Vanilla So Good Vanilla Bliss

•    A2 Australia manufactures their vanilla ice cream using Beta Carotene 160a, a safe alternative

We are not making this up. Mikkelsen et al 1978 talked about allergic reactions ("natural food colours may induce hypersensitivity reactions as frequent as synthetic dyes"), Drs Loblay and Swain first drew attention to food intolerance problems with annatto 160b in 1996 and even the Commonwealth Department of Health in their National Healthy School Canteens acknowledge (p45) that annatto is among the additives "most likely to be a problem".
